Home Improvement Sales Tactics. 7 Powerful Things You Need to Know.
Today is the first part in a series about insider information in the remodeling business. The truth behind home improvement sales tactics. Fake sales, deceptive marketing tactics, and fake discounts all plague the remodeling industry. At ProTex Remodeling we are often asked the question. Eric, how do I know if I am getting a good deal on my new window or siding project?
Home Improvement Sates Tactics #1 – Who is Coming to Your House to Give You a “FREE” Estimate Today?
Let me start by saying that a great salesperson is no accident, they are skilled, highly trained and most don’t get paid unless you buy something. Many remodeling companies spend thousands of dollars to train a single salesperson on the correct sales tactics to use in your home. That salesperson’s trained to do one thing, close the sale. Many remodeling companies have the budget to hire professional sales trainers.Training salespeople in a step-by-step, scripted sales process that is designed to separate you from your hard-earned money is their only reaponsibility. Is it really a “free”estimate? I doubt it, what usually happens is a scripted, planned out sales presentation that is going to take place in your home, and usually requiring all decision makers to be present is a common practice. We’re going to shed light on the ugly truthbehind replacement window sales and marketing tacticsand give you at least 5 things you need to know to get that “good deal”
Home Improvement Sales Tactics #2 – This Looks Like a Good Deal, But is it Really?
It all starts with the hook. These are some of the most commonly used marketing tactics you will see and that may look something like this:
Buy 2 windows get 1 free
Free Installation this month only
$1,500.00 off a house full of windows or siding
Special program or special government program. See if your house qualifies.
We’re looking for modelhomes in limited neighborhoods. See if your home qualifies
Window trade in discount
Buy 2 windows get 1 free
Pay as you go, our price is good for 12 months if you start your project today
No payments or zero interest for 12 months
Home Improvement Sales Tactics #3 – Will ALL the Decision Makers Be at the Appointment?
Ever wonder, when trying to set up your “free” estimate. Why some of the first questions they ask you sound something like this?
Are you married?
Will all decision makers involved be at the appointment?
Are there any other people that need to attend the appointment? We want to make sure they get all their questions answered.
We will need at least 2 hours for the appointment.
If anyonecan’t attend, please call and re-schedule.
Is there a specific budgetyou are thinking about?
Did you get any other estimates?
Will you need financing?
What’s your monthly payment goal?
When are you wanting to complete the project?
The answer is simple, these are all Pre-qualifying questions. These questions set the salesperson up with the best opportunity to close the sale. Pre-qualifying questions, expose and limit some of the most most common objections in the sales process. Examples of common objections are.
These are some of the common objections salespeople are trained to overcome. A good salesperson expects these objections and more. When you fire off an objection their training teaches them to say this:
Listen. The salespersons ability to listen and to understand, not only to respond, is critical. The nature of the objection and how it’s communicated. Also contains important information, helping the salesperson tailor their tone and delivery.
Ask questions. After a prospect’s objection, rather than pitching them, ask more questions. Asking questions will get give them a chance to expand on themselves and their needs. The more people talk about themselves, the more you will:
Build rapport with the prospect.
Establish trust from the prospect.
Justify the prospects time investment in you.
Isolate the objection. By rephrasing a prospects’ objections, priorities, and pain. You display that you’ve listened to them, understood them, and exhibited empathy.
Ask for the sale a minimum of 3 to 5 times. The sales profession is anything but easy. That’s why good salespeople are worth their weight in gold. Effective sales pros must have more positive qualities than a boy scout. Even if you do everything else right, asking for the close is challenging. This is why you need to adaptable to every behavioral style.
Repeat or loopback to the begining. Great salespeople will repeat this process until one of two things happen. You run out of objections that make logical sense and become a closed sale. Or, you get frustratedwith the process and ask them to leave. When you ask them to leave you may think, man I’m glad they’re leaving, but the fun is not over, yet.
Home Improvement Sales Tactics #4 – What is a Trial Close?
Beforeasking for the sale, and part of overcoming your objections. The salespersons uses a series of “trial closes”. Many companies require memorization of specific trial closes. Trial closes are introduced in a very specific order during the sales presentation. You’ll enjoy answering these questions because you simply are not aware of their intentions. The right questions, in the right order lead the salesperson down the correct path that you provided for them. Here are some examples of a trial close:
How do you feel about what we have discussed so far?
Wouldn’t you agree?
What do you thinkabout the solution I’ve shared with you?
How does what we’ve talked about soundto you?
Based on what you’ve heard so far, what are your questions?
Most of our customers financetheir project.
Are there any changes would you make to our proposal?
Did we miss any featuresthat you wanted in your project?
And my favorite. If we can meet your budget, is there any reason we can’t do business today?
Home Improvement Sales Tactics #5 – What is a Hard Close?
A hard close is when the salesperson is asking you directly for the order. People buy for two reasons. To avoid pain or loss. As well as, to gain pleasure. Here are some examples of a hard close:
Wouldn’t you agree that it makes sense to stop wasting money on high utility bills and the sooner you stop, the more money you start saving? Great, I’ll draw the paperwork up right now.
Wouldn’t you agree, those windows that won’t open are a safety issue for your family in an emergency? Great, we are going to keep your family safe starting right now.
This is a Limited Time Offer. Wouldn’t it make sense to take advantage of today’s pricing right now instead of paying more later? Congratulations on your new windows.
This offer is only good on the initial visit. Unfortunatly, if I come back later, you will loose this great savings opportunity. Doesn’t in make sence to move forward today? Sign here.
You told me that your budget was____. With this today onlydiscount, this fits your right into your budget. and you can start saving money today. Congratulations!
I understand that 20K is a lot of money. You told me that $225.00 per month was in your budget. Wouldn’t you agreethat it’s the monthly investment and not the overall price that’s most important? Plus, that payment is less once you factor in your new lowerutility costs making that new payment even less than your budget. We’ll do the paperwork right now.
Home Improvement Sales Tactics #6 – You Say to Yourself, I’m not Falling for any of this Nonsense.
Don’t be foolish. Great salespeoplewill make you enjoy the sales process. While weak salespeople won’t even ask you the questions. Which oneof these salespeople will show up to your house today? The skill of the salesperson will determine their success rate. As a rule, great salespeople sell more expensive products and make a great living. You will politely ask them to leave and this happens. It’s one final closing attempt and it’s called the doorknob close. They go something like this:
That it’s their fault and they must have must have done something wrong. They offer to get another salesperson involved.
You know, there may be one last offer I can get you. I will need to call my managerfor approval. It’s going to take a yes or no from you but it’s worth a try and you may save a large amount of money. Many companies mandate this step before a salesperson can leave the sales call.
And my favorite. The Taillight close. This is when the salesperson finally leaves and you’re thinking, Wow I’m glad that’s over. Five minutes later the doorbell rings. Mr. & Mrs. Smith, there’s one last thing that I completely forgot about. Knowing that we are so close to meeting your budget. I couldn’t bring myself to drive away without sharing this with you. May I come back in for a minute? and it starts all over again.
Home Improvement Sales Tactics #7 – I Need to get 3 Estimates.
People often say this a defence mechanism. The truth is, when you meet someone you trust, you know it. Guess who’s job it is to be that person? You guessed it, your sales rep. Here is what you may run into when you start shopping around.
The guy that sells windows out of his truck. He doesn’t know much about sales. May or may not know much about windows. More than likely, installs them himself and may not really know what he’s doing. He doesn’t know the correct way to price his jobs and make a profit. This company is usually the lowest price and the first to go out of business. There are No skilled salespeople to worry about here. They’re busy making money elsewhere!
The company that has a descent online presence. They know the difference between quality and cheap. Although they may offer both, they still revolve around price. They understand how to make some profit but may still be underbidding their jobs due to the lack of skilled sales people. They subcontract the installation of the windows, often at the lowest possible price. This attracts the novice installers because the good installers know their worth. This company can spends years chasing deposits due to bad cash flow and low margins. Very often taking money from one job to complete another. They usually fail within the first five to as long as ten years. This is where novice salespeoplelearn to close and usually fail.
The company that has a good online presenceand is easy to find. Has great examples and online reviews of their work and customer testimonials. They sells only quality products and pays installers at the top of the pay scale. This attracts good installers and reduces call backs, thus saving money. They have a good grasp on their business and understand profit and loss. Their prices reflect the real cost of doing business. This company usually lands in the middle to upper end of the price range. This is where above average salespeople progress to, and some become a closer.
The company that has an unlimited budget and a huge online presence. Customer reviews that are usually filteredusing a company like Guild Quality. Sales managers handle trainingof the salespeople in the art of closing and re-hashing sales appointments that weren’t closed. Often these companies have a large overheadincluding payroll, leases, company vehicles and more. Usually, they sell quality products while understanding that a great sales presentation can make a cheap product look good. They have a clear understanding of profit and loss. Their services are priced to reflect their increased overhead and cost of doing business. Sometimes these companies will leverage high volumeagainst better pay for the installers. This may not attract the best installers because the workload doesn’t add up to the pay scale. There is usually an in-house service tech. That person spends their time running behind the installers and putting out fires. To trim the fat, they often look for places to squeeze margins. Usually resulting cheaper installation materials and labor. This company is almost always at or near the highest priced estimates. This is where a real closer works!
In Summary, Buyer Beware.
Buying home improvement is like going to Las Vegas. You’re about to spend more money than you planned. While a skilled person, playing a game you may not know, directs you down a path you didn’t plan on going and enjoying every minute of the process. All the while, that little voice in your head is telling you to stop and go see a show. Sorry about the gambling analogy but there’s a reason I don’t go to Las Vegas. The deck is more than likely, stacked against you. In the home improvement business the deck is stacked the same way! Keep in mind that a salesperson sees anywhere between 5 to 15 households per week about home improvement. How mayny times per week to you see a salesperson?

There are several factors that determine the quality and price of your new windows. None more important than the quality of the installation. Here is what you should consider when choosing a replacement window and contractor.
Bronze replacement window frames in a brick house
🔍What makes a Great Window Installation?
✅ The qualityof your installation depends on several key factors. Let’s look at the most importantsteps to follow for a great window installation and why.
Proper job site preparation. We always take the time to lay down slip proof runners in all high traffic areas of the home to protect your floors. Plus, movers grade padded drop cloths in front of all window openings. As well as painters’ plastic to cover all work site areas and electronics.
Proper glass de-glazing. We de-glaze your glass with heat and a putty knife. Breaking the seal between the glass and window frame. Then remove your glass intact, whenever possible.
Proper window extraction without damaging the interior or exterior of the home. Removing aluminum window frames takes expertise and patience. Depending on the windows install by the builder. Extraction can sometimes be a very difficult processrequiring both expertise and patience.
Proper window opening prep before installing the window. Preparing your window opening before installing the new window is imperative. You must remove old mortar and caulking. Plus, removal and replacement of rotted wood. Install OSI Quad spray foam between the brick and exterior sheathing. Especially above the window to re-direct water flow that may get behind the brick.
Proper window placement. The new window mustbe set both level and plumb when possible. Sometimes the home is so far out of square that doing so will make the new window look like it’s installed crooked.
Proper shim and screw placement. Always use composite shims to set the new window up over any imperfections in the brick. As well as, in the jambs, head and behind screw placement on large picture windows. Only use dual threaded, composite, exterior screws to install windows. Neveruse interior drywall screws to install a window.
Install OSI Quadspray foam around the new window and in large gaps where necessary. This buts a second layer of protection around your new windows.
Check the operation of all window components.
Apply OSI Quad caulkingto all exterior surfaces to ensure a water and airtight seal. Install paintable interior caulking between the window and sheetrock or trim molding.
Clean all window and glass surfaces.
Vacuum and sweep all flooring. Clean all the debris from the exterior landscape.
🔍What are the Most Important Features when Selecting Windows?
✅Frame type is crucial in a new window. Windows come in a variety of materials. Vinyl, Wood, Fiberglass, Fibrex and Aluminum are the most popular. Each have benefits and value over the other.
This is the most popular replacement window material. Vinyl windows represent over 70% of all windows sold in the world today. A quality vinyl should have a full 3 ¼” frame. Multi chambered construction for strength. Titanium Dioxide treated for durability and reinforcedframe and sash for added security. The best vinyl windows have foam filledwindow frames and sashes available. Foam fill adds better thermal performance, also deadening sound.
Fiberglass and Fibrex. Unlike vinyl, these materials are strong and do not need reinforcement for security. Plus, both are molded into various shapes. As well as, sanded and painted like real wood.
Real wood windows stand the test of time in both function and elegance. Early wood windows were not user friendly. Also, they tended to become inoperable over time, due to many years of painting. Modern wood windows are factory finished and need minimal maintenance. Wood windows are best for full frame replacement down to the rough opening. The best wood windows have a maintenance free exterior cladding for lasting durability.
Due to its light weight and durability, aluminumwindows are best suited for commercialapplications. Aluminum is a great conductor of heat and cold. The addition of a thermal break helps with conduction but does not solve the problem. Aluminum windows have the thinnest frame and maximize glass space.
The single most important part of a replacement window is the glass. Various glass coatings differ in manufacturing. Low-E coatings reflect cut solar heat gain and filter UV light. The addition of Argon or Krypton slows down conduction and adds solar efficiency. Dual and Triple glazings are available, depending on the climate. All modern glass is Energy Star Certified.
NFRC Rating. NFRC stickers are on all replacement and new construction windows. The information on the sticker reflects the performance of the individual window. NEVER allow someone to install a window where the NFRC sticker is missing. This is a bait and switch tactic, used by shady window contractors. Report an instance of missing NFRC stickers to your local municipality immediately.
Summary: How do you choose a good window and what does it cost?

🔎Are you a Texas homeowner feeling the sting of those sky-high electric bills during the scorching summer months? Well, your old aluminum windows could be to blame, sucking up energy and costing you big time.
👍But fear not, my friend! By swapping out those outdated windows for energy-efficient ones, you could slash your energy costs by a hefty 10% to 35%, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. That’s a sweet $250 to $1,500 or more in savings each year! And here in the Lone Star State, where the heat is no joke, upgrading to Energy Star 7 replacement windows with Cardinal 366 or 452+ glass might even cut your electricity bill by a whopping 35% or more.
It’s all about understanding the true costs, payback, and benefits of window replacement. This article is your ultimate guide to the ins and outs of energy savings, payback, and the awesome benefits of upgrading to Vinyl replacement windows that feature the latest Cardinal glass technology.
In a nutshell:
– Say goodbye to those old aluminum windows and hello to new vinyl windows that offer significant energy savings and less strain on the Texas power grid.
– Texas homeowners could pocket anywhere from $900 to $2000.00 or more in annual savings.
✅Key Takeaways
Replacing old aluminum windows can lead to significant energy savings and less stress on the Texas power grid.
Texas Homeowners can save from $900 to $2,000 annually or more with high performance vinyl windows.
New vinyl windows can improve your home’s overall energy efficiency and performance.
Understanding the true costs of replacing your windows is key for homeowners.
Energy-efficient vinyl windows can provide a substantial ROI. Especially when upgraded to Energy Star 7 qualified glass coatings.
💰The Real Cost of Outdated Windows in Texas 💰
Old windows, especially aluminum, can really raise your energy bills and make your home less comfy. They can let up to 25-50% of heating and cooling energy costs escape through heat transfer and air leaks. As well as, allowing bugs and allergans to enter your home through worn out weatherstripping and cracks.
Common Energy Loss Issues with Aging Windows
Old windows often leak air and let heat pass through the uncoated glass. This makes your home less energy-effecient. It also makes your living space less comfy, especially in sunny rooms and second story areas of your home.
Air Leakage and Thermal Transfer Problems
Air leaks happen when gaps in windows let air, dust, allergens and bugs in your home. Heat also passes through the glass and is often amplified by uncoated or single pane windows. Modern, energy-saving vinyl replacement windows with the latest in Cardinal 366 Glass technology can fix these problems.
Hidden Costs of Maintaining Deteriorating Windows
Keeping old windows in shape can cost a lot of money. You’ll need to fix them often and spend a lot of time on upkeep. Plus, you are wasting thousands of dollars on energy that escapes out your old, drafty windows.
How Texas Climate Accelerates Window Deterioration
The Texas weather, with its hot summers and humid air, makes windows wear out faster. This harsh weather affects how long and well your windows last. Most homes in Dallas Fort Worth have windows that are well beyond their intended life span, causing excess stress on an already Fragile Texas Power Grid.
Impact of DFW Heat and Humidity on Window Lifespan
The Dallas/Fort Worth area’s heat and humidity make windows break down quicker. Vinyl windows are a smart choice because they stand up well to these conditions. Vinyl windows make up more than $27.5 Million of the US market
Seasonal Temperature Fluctuations and Window Performance
Changes in temperature with the seasons also affect how well windows perform. New vinyl windows are designed to handle seasonal changes. Modern replacement windows help you save energy and make your home more comfortable.
Knowing about these problems helps you choose the right replacement windows. This way, you can make your home more energy-efficient.
🔎Understanding Replacement Window Costs in the Dallas – Fort Worth
When you think about replacing windows in the Dallas – Fort Worth area, knowing the costs is key. The investment for replacement windows can be effected by several of the following factors.
💵Initial Investment: What Texas Homeowners Can Expect to Pay
Replacing one window in Dallas Ft Worth, including labor, starts about $950 on average. Replacing all the windows in your home can save you money because of the expences involved in sending an installation crew to your home. The average team can install 8-10 vinyl windows per day in the Texas heat. Buying windows in groups of 8-10 can reduce your overall investment per window. The average Texas home has over 20 windows. The investment for this size project can range between $16,685 and $33,425. The price depends on the quantity, type, color and installation materials used on your window project.
💶Average Costs by Window Type and Material
Vinyl windows are popular because they’re durable, non conductive, low maintenance and save energy. Vinyl windows are usually the best value for your hard earned money. Cardinal366 windows, with their advanced tech, might cost more. But they perform better.
Aluminum Windows are used in older homes and comercial buildings where energy efficiency is not a top priority. Because of the volatile price of aluminum including tarrifs, these windows are rarely used in residential construction.
Wood Windows are known for their beauty and energy efficiency. Modern wood windows are cladded on the exterior to protect them from the hars weather. Wood windows are popular in high end architecture and used quite often in large estates. Because of the labor and materials involved in manufacturing wood windows, they are very expensive and mostly for large custom homes.
💷Installation Expenses and Additional Considerations
How much you pay for installation is a big part of the cost. Things like how hard your old windows are to remove, one or two story house, access to the existing windows as well as the quality of the sealants and the experience of the installer all play a roll in the installation cost. ProTex Remodeling installers are Certified by OSI Sealants. Our installations are covered by a 15 Year No Leak Warranty. Think about these things when you are planning your budget.
💸Factors That Influence Your Window Replacement Budget
Many things can change how much you spend on new replacement windows. Knowing these can help you make an informed decision.
Window Options and Their Price Points
Frame material and color, size, shape, operation, grids, foam fill, composite reinforcement and glass options all effect the total investment of each windows. In general, the more options you choose, the more your investment will be.
Energy-Efficient Options and Their Price Points
Choosing vinyl windows that save energy, like those with Upgraded Low-E coatings, Argon or Krypton Gas Fill and Foam Filled Frames can cost more at first. But they can save you money on utility bills over time and eventually pay for themselves.
🔍Energy Efficiency: The Science Behind Modern Window Technology
Modern window technology has evolved over the last decade and is changing how homes save energy, especially in climates like Texas. This evolution comes from advanced technology in glass coatings and gas fillers that makes windows perform better.
Cardinal LoE366 vs. Single Pane Glass: A Technical Comparison
Cardinal LoE366 glass is a big step up from old single-pane glass. It has multiple Low-E coatings, combined with argon gas that reduces heat from transferring in or out. This keeps your family home cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
Heat Reflection Properties and Insulation Values
The Low-E coating on Cardinal LoE366 glass reflects heat instead of absorbing it. This cuts down on heat gain in Texas summers. It means lower cooling costs and more comfort. Single-pane glass doesn’t have this coating, so it loses more energy and actually amplifies the heat that enters your home through the glass.
Performance in Texas Summer Conditions
In Texas summers, Cardinal LoE366 glass shines by reflecting solar radiation and keeping heat out. This glass technology also filters harmful UV and visible light, reducing glare. This helps your air conditioning system work less, last longer and makes your home more comfortable.
Cardinal452+ Technology: The Latest and Most Advanced Protection for Extreme Texas Heat
Cardinal452+ Glass Technology goes even further with its advanced 4 Layers of Low-E Coating for the lowest solar heat gain. This glass technology also includes Cardinals newest Neat Plus easy clean coating for cleaner glass. Simply put, Cardinal 452+ does it all in one package. This glass technology stops Texas heat and keeps it where it belongs, outside.
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient and U-Factor Ratings
The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) shows how well a window blocks sun heat. Cardinal452+ has a low SHGC, showing it’s good at blocking solar heat and glare while allowing maximum visible light to pass through. Its U-Factor rating is also better than uncoated dual-pane windows, showing it’s more insulating during the cool Texas winters.

Noise pollution is a big problem for homeowners. It affects not just how well you live but also your health. Knowing where noise comes from and how it affects you is key.
Common Sources of External Noise in Residential Areas
Many things can make noise in your home, like traffic, construction sites, and airports. These can really raise the noise level in your home. For example, living near a busy road or under a flight path means constant noise.
How Noise Affects Your Health and Well-being
Noise pollution has serious health effects. High levels of noise can cause stress, sleep problems, and heart issues. It can also hurt children’s brains, affecting their learning and growth.
Sleep Disruption and Cognitive Performance
Noise pollutioncan mess up your sleep. High noise at nirmanceght can make you tired and less sharp. This is a big worry for kids and the elderly, as it can hurt their daily life and happiness.
Understanding how noise pollution affects your home and health is the first step to fixing it. It’s not just about finding where the noise comes from. It’s also about finding ways to reduce it, like using noise-reducing glass, to make your home quieter.
Measuring Noise: Decibel Levels in Your Home Environment
Measuring noise levels in your home is the first step to a quieter space. Knowing the decibel levels helps you spot areas needing noise reduction.
Understanding the Decibel Scale for Homeowners
The decibel scale measures sound intensity. Homeowners need to grasp this scale to gauge their home’s noise levels. For example, a normal conversation is about 60 decibels. But, a lawnmower or vacuum can reach up to 90 decibels or more.
Common Household and Neighborhood Noise Levels
Many sources contribute to noise pollution in homes and neighborhoods. These include traffic, aircraft, construction, and loud music. Knowing these sources and their decibel levels is key to effective noise reduction.
How to Measure Noise Levels in Your Home
To measure home noise, use a sound level meter or a smartphone app. These tools give accurate decibel readings. They help pinpoint areas needing noise reduction.
Here’s a simple table to show common noise sources and their decibel levels:
Noise Source
Decibel Level (dB)
Whisper
20
Normal Conversation

For a detailed analysis, consider these factors when measuring noise levels:
Time of day: Noise levels change a lot between day and night.
Location: Noise levels vary by room or area in your home.
Source: Find the main sources of noise pollution.
By understanding and measuring decibel levels in your home, you can choose the right noise reduction measures. This might include investing in noise reduction glass.
Noise Reduction Glass: The Science of Soundproofing Windows
Soundproofing windows is a complex science, but it makes homes quieter. To understand how, we need to know how sound moves through regular windows. We also need to know about Sound Transmission Class (STC) ratings.
How Sound Travels Through Traditional Windows
Regular windows don’t block sound well because of how they’re made. Sound waves go through single-pane glass, making homes noisy. Double-pane windows help a bit, but there’s still room for better sound blocking.
Advanced noise reduction glass uses special materials and designs. These help block sound much better.
Sound Transmission Class (STC) Ratings Explained
STC ratings measure how well materials block sound, like windows. A higher STC rating means a window blocks more noise. For example, a window with an STC rating of 30 blocks little sound. But a rating of 50 or higher blocks a lot more.
Interpreting STC Charts for Your Home
When picking noise reduction glass, STC charts are key. They show how different materials compare. For instance, laminated glass blocks more sound than regular tempered glass.
Looking at STC charts helps you pick the best glass for your needs.

Choosing the right noise reduction glass can make your home much quieter. It’s all about understanding how soundproofing windows work. This knowledge helps you create a quieter living space.
Tempered Glass for Noise Reduction: Capabilities and Limitations
The glass is heated up, then cooled down quickly. This process, called quenching, boosts its strength and makes it more resistant to heat stress.
STC Ratings of Standard Tempered Glass Windows
The Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating shows how well a window blocks noise. Standard tempered glass windows usually have an STC rating of 25-30. This is not as good as some other noise-reducing options.
Visual Comparison: Tempered Glass vs. Standard Glass Performance
Comparing tempered glass to standard glass shows that tempered glass is stronger. But, it doesn’t do much better in blocking noise. Here are some main differences:
Tempered glass is stronger and more resistant to breakage.
STC ratings for tempered glass are generally between 25-30.
Standard glass has lower STC ratings, typically around 20-25.
In summary, tempered glass has many benefits but doesn’t do well in reducing noise. If you want to block noise, you might need to look at other options like laminated or dissimilar glass.
Laminated Glass: The Sound-Dampening Sandwich
Laminated glass is a special solution for blocking outside noise. It has a unique interlayer that helps dampen sound. This makes it great for people who want to keep their homes quieter.
Structure and Composition of Laminated Glass
Laminated glass is made by placing a PVB interlayer between two glass panes. The PVB layer is key in soaking up sound energy. This means less outside noise gets into your home.
How the PVB Interlayer Blocks Sound Transmission
The PVB layer in laminated glass is crucial for sound dampening. When sound hits the glass, the PVB absorbs it. This stops the sound from passing through, making your home quieter.
STC Performance Graph: Laminated vs. Tempered Glass
Comparing the Sound Transmission Class (STC) ratings of laminated and tempered glass shows laminated’s edge. The table below shows the STC ratings of both.
Glass Type
STC Rating
Laminated Glass
35-50+
Tempered Glass
25-30
The table clearly shows laminated glass is better at blocking sound. It’s a smart choice for those who want a quieter home.
Dissimilar Glass: Advanced Technology for Maximum Noise Control
Dissimilar glass is a big step forward in noise reduction. It uses different thicknesses of glass to block sound better. This makes it great for keeping noise out.
The Science Behind Varying Glass Thickness
The magic of dissimilar glass comes from its design. Varying the thickness of glass panes messes up sound waves. This makes it harder for sound to get through, making rooms quieter.
How Dissimilar Glass Disrupts Sound Wave Patterns
Dissimilar glass stops sound waves from passing through smoothly. Sound waves hit the glass and cause it to vibrate. But with dissimilar glass, the different thicknesses scatter sound waves, reducing noise.
The Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating shows how well glass blocks sound. Dissimilar glass setups get much higher STC ratings than regular glass. For example, a mix of 4mm and 6mm glass can reach an STC of 40 or more.
Knowing how dissimilar glass works helps homeowners choose the right noise control solutions.
Head-to-Head Comparison: Which Noise Reduction Solution Wins?
Many homeowners want a quieter home. They look at different noise reduction glass options. It’s important to know the good and bad of each to make a smart choice.

Why Do Black Windows Cost So Much? A Comprehensive Guite to Answering This Question.
You may wonder – Why do black replacement windows cost so much and can I afford them? Did you ever drive around your neighborhood, see those trendy new black windows, and think, wow those are nice black windows, how much do they cost? So, you decide to get an estimate from a reputable window dealer in your area and about fell over when you got the price on the black windows. We will shed some light on what drives up the price of black windows and custom color replacement windows so you don’t have to wonder why black replacement windows cost so much?
Are Black Replacement Windows the Right Choice for My Home?
A few years ago there were no black vinyl window options available. The choice was only between white, beige and clay with people choosing white well over 90% of the time. There’s a reason every window manufacturer makes white their standard color, it’s the most popular and most affordable choice. But, now we have black and bronze windows as an option. As well as custom-painted exterior colors.
At Protex Remodeling, we use both white and black windows in our customers’ homes. They are both excellent choices if you’re searching for new modern windows. White is the most popular window color for most projects. Yet, for some projects, black windows are the better choice.
Why choose black windows or a custom-painted color?
Contrast. If the siding is light and I want more contrast, I use black, bronze or custom colored windows.
Modern. Black windows are an ultra modern look, which is often the style our customer wants for their home. Keep in mind, black windows are also trendy and have not proven themselves as a long term, viable option when it comes to UV exposure and may fade more over time.
Style. If your home is modern, transitional or a modern farmhouse, then black windows or a custom exterior color is your best choice.
Cost. Usually, 20-35% more than standard colors, so your project needs to budget for them.
Why do Black Replacement Windows Cost so Much More?
At Protex Remodeling we often get the question, why do black replacement windows cost so much more than other windows? The answer is, black replacement windows are a larger investment than standard replacement window colors and here are some reasons why. Colored window frames of any kind add complexity to the manufacturing process, sometimes outsourcing adds to the cost of manufacturing. Instead of relying on replacement window extrusion where the color is solid all the way through. Manufacturers have to remove the black window frames from the production line and paint them or laminate the frames with durable foil laminates. The machinery involved in manufacturing black windows is expensive and requires skilled labor to operate.
Most manufacturers that paint their windows use a special bonding agent. As well as expensive special paints, engineered to perform on their specific window material. Some vinyl extrusion manufacturers use what’s called Co-Extrudedframe, or Foil Wrap frame. This is a manufacturing process where the bonding of color adds to the extrusion of the black window frames. Co-extruded vinyl windows are more durable and last longer than a painted exterior. Think of it as a laminated kitchen countertop. So next time you ask yourself why do black replacement windows cost so much? Remember these facts.
Manufacturing Challenges of Black Window Frames
The up-charge for choosing black-framed windows or custom-colored window frames is here to stay and olny getting more costly as technology progresses. Until manufacturers launch black as a color additive blended into the vinyl extrusion in a similar fashion that produces white, beige, and clay windows. Black windows will continue to increase in cost.
The Challenges with Black Windows in Texas
The number one challenge with why black replacement windows cost so much in Texas, is the heat build-up on the window frames and the effects of UV radiationon the color. Depending on the color and material, the window frame can exceed 210 degrees in the summer heat. The increased temperature of the black window frame puts extra stress on the glass. Often, this can shorten the life of the insulated glass unit and increase seal failures. Plus, with vinyl windows, if not installed to manufacturers’ specifications, the heat buildup may cause the frames to twist. Plus, with aluminum windows, the danger of getting a burn from touching the hot window frame is a concern.
Another challenge is window fading from sun’s UVdamage. Painted windows are going to fade much faster than a co-extruded window. Both painted and co-extruded windows, depending on the manufacturer, will only give you a 15 year warranty against fading. Keep in mind, that most vinyl window manufacturers have not been making black windows for 15 years. This is an arbitrary number at best. Your black replacement windows may last much longer. No one knows yet. Aluminum manufacturers have been making dark color replacement windows for decades. Aluminum replacement windows will chalk and fade with time. When that happens, there is no way to fix them.
The final challenges with black vinyl windows in Texas are the sealants used in the installation process. Most Texas window installersare going to use the least expensive sealants they can find. When it comes to the effects of heat and UV, sealants have the same issues that black frames do. It is imperative that you use a high quality sealant like OSI Quad Max when inatalling any color window. Not only do OSI sealants last longer and perorm better. They are covered by a 15 year no leak warrantywhen your new windows are installed by an OSI certified installer like ProTex Remodeling.
How Much Does a Black Replacement Window Cost?

This article will discuss a brief history of PVC and its impact on the construction industry. As well as some advantages, disadvantages, problems and what makes a good vinyl replacement window. At the end of this article, you will be able to answer this question with confidence.
A brief History:
PVC is the second most produced plastic by volume worldwide (after polyethylene). Vinyl is the most produced plastic for building and construction material.
The first PVC windows came from German manufacturers in 1954. Vinyl was a response to post-war material shortages. This was a means to combat the rising cost of aluminum and other building materials.
In 1964, Thermal Industries introduced the first PVC window to the United States. Vinyl windows gained popularity during the energy crisis of the early 1970, as consumers were looking for energy-efficient alternatives for their homes.
PVC windows make up more than 70% of the market share for residential windows in the United States.

What Are Some Advantages of PVC windows?
PVC windows offer myriad design options and features. Vinyl is easy to extrude into almost any shape. Making vinyl ideal for architectural shaped windows.
With the addition of Titanium Dioxide into PVC extrusion. Modern vinyl windows are now available in a myriad of custom colors and finishes. Black and dark bronze are a new but popular color.
Vinyl windows have very low maintenance. Vinyl windows never need sanding or painting. The color of vinyl windows are solid through the entire piece of vinyl. Vinyl window frames are easy to clean with soap and water.
PVC is non-conductive, making them superior for energy-efficiency. Making PVC a great thermal insulators when compared to wood or aluminum.
Foam filled window frames make PVC windows a great choice for thermal performance.
Vinyl windows are a green energy product and recyclable. Vinyl is remolded into new products, without losing its chemical characteristics.
According to the Vinyl Institute, vinyl production is more than 99% efficient. Plus in 2021, more than 1.1 million tons of the vinyl is recycledinto other useful products.
According to the EPA in a 2018 Municipal Solid Waste Report. PVC represents only 2.6%of all plastic that is land-filled.
What are Some Disadvantages of PVC windows?
Vinyl windows may have the tendency to sag due to their flexibility. Modern vinyl windows include composite reinforcementwith various materials to add strength and support.
Some people find vinyl windows less elegant or natural-looking than real wood windows. Attempting to replicate real wood. Vinyl windows have interior laminates like oak, cherry, pine, and birch.
Vinyl window frames can soften, warp, twist and bow if heat builds up within the frame. Modern additives like Titanium Dioxidereduces this in problem in quality vinyl replacement windows.
Vinyl windows are not particularly strong or rigid. But, windows are not load bearingso this has never been much of an issue.
Vinyl windows can discolor over time, especially when subjected to extreme weather conditions. Modern color additives like Titanium Dioxide and Sun-shield vinylprevent excessive fading.
Vinyl windows are difficult to paint. Most paints will not adhere to vinyl, and some primers can weaken the vinyl. New paint technology, changing the way manufacturers are able to produce black vinyl windows.
Vinyl windows can be prone to hail damage and other weather extremes. This is where the quality of the vinyl window is important. Vinyl thickness, titanium dioxide and heavy-duty extruded screen frames all provide lasting durability.
What Defects do PVC Windows Have?
Pocket sillvinyl windows are great for wind resistance. Weep holes in the bottom of the frame, allow water drainage. Weep holes can clog with debris and trap excess moisture inside the window frame, causing mold issues. Manufacture’s drill weep holes into the bottom side of the frame to help this problem. Bad window installers can install a window upside-down. As a result, the weep holes are on the top, making them useless.
Alarm system holes can permit water penetration, especially in the window sill. Drilling holes in your vinyl windows will void factory warranties. When installing an alarm system. Unknowing installers will often drill a small hole for the alarm wire at the base of the window frame. With vinyl windows, water may leave the window through this hole and follow the alarm wire into the house. This water can cause serious interior water damageand must be avoided at all costs. Wireless alarm systems with glass breakage and motion detectors are a great alternative.
Separated window frame corners. Builders grade and cheap vinyl windows often use a mechanical fastened corner. These types of corners consist of screws and a gasketor sealant. Due to expansion and contraction, mechanical corners are prone to failure. Modern vinyl windows use a mitered, fusion heat welded corner. Welded corners are stronger than the window frame itself and rarely have a failure. Installation screw placement is critical. The installation screw must not pass through the corner weld. causing the weld to fail.
When a vinyl window is not installed properly. The window frame can sag and twist. Warping in a vinyl window happens for a variety of reasons. Some reasons include; improper screw and shim placement, window measured wrong or installed out of level and failure to apply spray foam around the window frame.
What Makes a Good Vinyl Window?
Full 3 ¼” window frame for easy replacement and durability.

Did I get a Bad Installation? 3 Key Details you Need to Know.
At ProTex Remodeling we often run into Texas homeowners that ask us. Did I get a bad installation? The remodeling industry in Texas is not regulated. Texas does not require licensing for builders, remodeling contractors or handymen nor does it require Liability Insurance or Workmans Comp. Having held a Residential Builders License in my home state, I am a fan of licensing requirements for contractors. The builders license testthat I had to take was not easy. Licensed contractors must carry insurance, pay annual fees and complete continuing education. The consumer has recourse against bad contractors when they’re licensed. Texas only requires specialty licensing for certain trades. Texas does not require business insurance coverage for contractors. Texas does not make contractors carry general liability insurance or workmans comp. Therefore, most of the cheap contractors do not have insurance. An uninsured contractorcan leave you exposed to liability. Especially if damage or injury happen on your property.
The Problem with No Contractor Licensing in Texas.
In Texas, anyone can become a contractor. There are some great unlicensed contractors in Texas but the majority are not great. Lack of licensing requirements opens the door for fraud and poor workmanship. Without licensing, anyone can install windows, doors and siding. Lack of licensing can open the door to scammers. Someone can claim to be a contractor, get paidto do the work, and then take off, never to be seen again. This happens in Texas more often than the state likes to admit. If you are a victim of a shady contractor, you have little to no recourse without licensing.
Most Companies Subcontract Installations.
Common practice in the remodeling industry is the use of subcontractors. There are advantages and disadvantages of using subcontractors. Companies use subcontractors to avoid payroll taxes, workers comp and medical insurance. Although there are some great subcontractors in the marketplace. There are also bad subcontractors that have no concern for the quality of their work. Additionally, contractors in Texas use “day labor” . You often see day laborers hanging out in your local home improvement storeparking lot. Day laborers are often in the country illegally. Plus, many have criminal backgrounds, putting your family’s safety at risk.
Why be a Subcontractor?
The Good Subcontractor. The main reason is the ability to make a great living as a subcontractor in the remodeling trade. As a subcontractor, I spent 20 years honing my craft. It is not uncommon for a great subcontractor to generate income well into the six figures. Good subcontractors are in high demand. Plus good subcontractors usually have skilled people working with them. Most good subcontractors are not looking for more work because they are always busy.
The Bad Subcontractor: This person has a hard time keeping people. Plus, they may be behind on taxesand insurance premiums. High turnoverusually results in poor work quality. Due to termination, the bad subcontractor looking for new companies to work for. Finally, the bad subcontractor goes out of business. Even worse, they wind up as a discount priced company because no one else will hire them, and this guy might on the way to your house today.
The difference is in the installation.
The Good Subcontractor.Arrive at the job-site on time. Has an installation process that’s followed every day. A good installation process looks something like this.
Introduces the crew membersto the customer. The crew members have all been background checked for safety.
Their vehicle and equipment, parked in front of the job-site and free of leaks.
Job-site is set up using padded drop cloths, runners. As well as, plastic to cover all delicate surfaces. The exterior is always protected as well.
Window and door extraction happens with care.Trying not to break glass, damage sheetrock or the exterior of the window opening.
Window opening is prepared correctly for your new window.
The window’s installed to industry standards. Plus, adjustments to the window operation and all surfaces cleaned.
Replace all rotted wood. Plus, applying sealants to the interior and exterior surfaces per manufacturers specifications..
Vacuuming and cleaning the interior work area.
Clean the exterior work area.
Lead installer does a walk through with the customer. Plus, explains the operation of all windows.
The Bad Subcontractor.Often arrives at the job-site late and smelling like cigarette smoke, last night’s alcoholor the marijuana he smoked on the way to your house. There is no real process in place to manage the installation and they are often in a hurry. A bad installationlooks something like this.
Says helloto the customer without formal introductions
Their vehicle’s parked in front of the job-site. This vehicle is often older, high mileage and in need of repair. Plus, it may leak fluids.
Remove the screenfrom the old window and throw it outside to catch some of the mess.
Place a small tarp, drop cloth or piece of carpet in front of the windows interior.
Quickly break the glass out with a hammer. Causeing dangerous glassto fly in all different directions
Extract the frame as fast as possible. This crew often has several installations for the same day and does not have time to waste.
Install the window, often without improper shims and screws. Most often new windowdoes not operate like it should and is not installed correctly.
Apply cheap caulkingon the inside and outside of the window. Remember, there are bills to pay, so cheapermaterials are better. Rotted wood replacement is not included in the low bid.
Pick up the screen and drop cloth. As well as, any obvious large pieces of debris. No time to vacuuming, raking the grass or sweeping the patio.
They ask for your final payment and leave.
So, Did You Get a Bad Window Installation?
If you are looking for new windows, doors and siding. This is an exampleof what your installation might look like. When dealing with a reputable company that uses either subcontractors or employees. Your installationshould be a well rehearsed and a seamless process. and seamless process. Personnel should be background checked for safety and properly trained and certified. Using only quality materialsand replace any rotted wood. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee the person showing up to your house tomorrow will fall into the good category.
